6 business blogging tips for your next article

Does your business have a blog?

If so, then these blog writing tips are for you (or your copywriter)

6 copywriting tips for your next article

1. Use sub-headings

Readers are like wild animals, hunting for information. Sub-headings will help readers scan text easily to find the info they want.

2. Write for one person only

Avoid phrases like:

  • To those of you…
  • Many of you…
  • If you have not already…

These are all a sign that you’re writing to a faceless crowd rather than one reader.

3. Use short words and sentences

“Complexity is your enemy. Any fool can make something complicated. It is harder to make something simple” – Sir Richard Branson

4. Use bullet points

People don’t read your blog. They scan it.

Why? So they can skip the bits they don’t care about (I know it hurts, but it’s the truth!)

Using bullet points helps people scan your article easily.

5. Don’t write about yourself

It’s an easy trap to fall into.

Because writing about your business is the easy option when you’re out of ideas.

Instead, put yourself in your customer’s shoes and write about what will interest them – and if you’re not sure what will interest them, ask!

6. Avoid jargon at all costs

Do you use words that your customers don’t understand?

Acronyms and industry jargon are terrible, because they put a barrier up between your business and your reader.

If you absolutely must use jargon, explain it first using language that a 10 year old can understand.

Note: I should get a slap on the wrist for using the word ‘blog’.
