2D vs 3D Animation | The Rise of CGI Advertising

It’s no secret that Animation has transformed how we create digital content. You have probably seen those epic CGI campaigns floating around on your feed – the ones with the giant products that usually float around iconic locations such as the London Underground or Bondi Beach.

They look so real that they make you do a double-take.

Well, this is the new wave of digital visual effects. And no, CGI isn’t just for epic blockbuster movies, it is now being used throughout digital media.

These campaigns are exciting, and creative and stand out amongst the noise. But before we get too deep into all things CGI, let’s rewind a bit and see how this way of advertising has come about.

Various CGI Animation Campaigns

The Evolution from 2D to 3D

2D Animation is the OG of advertising creativity – the kind that hits us right in the feels, with nostalgia-inducing vibes that remind us of simpler times.

And as you probably know, it is still used A LOT within digital marketing today. Hell, we dabble in 2D animation with almost all of our clients.

It still remains an interactive way to tell a story and capture attention.

The Rise of 3D Animation

Now 3D Animation enters the chat.

The world of 3D unlocked storytelling potential that felt larger than life. It has the ability to seem more realistic than 2D animation while still encompassing storytelling and attention-grabbing capabilities. If you’ve seen Avatar: The Way of the Water in 3D, you’ll know exactly what we mean.

Then comes CGI, a way of animating so good it blurs the lines between real and fake. Again, we can use Avatar as another film example, but what about marketing?

With CGI, advertisers are breaking every rule of reality. Want mega-long eyelashes on the London Tube? Done. A very, very large Jacquemus bag trotting along Paris? Easy.

CGI makes it possible to create jaw-dropping campaigns that stick in our heads and rake in that social media engagement. They are hella fun, kind of scary and also take creativity and talent to a whole new level.

CGI- The New Kid on the Block

Our thoughts on why CGI is eating up digital marketing (and why we are here for it):

Creative Freedom

Reality? What reality? CGI lets brands create absolutely anything. Kind of like AI on steroids. Although AI is great, there are often times you can tell if something is AI, with CGI it is so well done it often leaves you questioning what is real and what is fake.

Physical limitations are so 2019. 😮‍💨

Engagement

When done well, CGI has the power to break the internet. Never have we ever scrolled past a UGI video on our feeds, wbu?

These campaigns are outrageous, they are a little silly and they kind of (definitely) leave you in awe.

Cost-Effectiveness

Just like AI, CGI eliminates the need for massive production crews, elaborate on-location shoots, or on-set designs.

Need a Mercedes Benz speeding through an erupting volcano? Ugh, CGI can do that. CGI can do just about anything for a lot smaller of a price.

You don’t have to build the set or fly halfway across the world. Win, win right!?

The Verdict

CGI animation is definitely paving the way, but it works best when it enhances reality rather than replacing it entirely. We think we will be seeing a lot more CGI advertising in the future and we can’t wait to see how creative people are going to get with it!
