Excuse me, what now?
Yep, we’re calling: good website user experience isn’t about keeping people on the page as long as possible.
“Time on site” and “engagement” have been treated like badges of honour, as if trapping a visitor on your page were the whole point. We think that thinking’s backwards now. The best websites answer the question, solve the problem, and send the visitor straight back out the door.
Here’s why that shift matters more than it used to.
In this post:
The average person sees somewhere between 4,000 and 10,000 ads a day and checks their phone around 96 times. And people are properly over it.
There’s a real countertrend underway, especially among younger adults, away from digital noise and back toward real, in-person experiences. A third of consumers now say they’d pick an offline brand experience over an online one, and Forrester’s Consumer Pulse Surveys show in-person shopping is back on the rise. Some travellers are even paying extra for hotels that lock their phones away for the stay.
If your customer is exhausted by screens and wants their evening back, a slow, cluttered website just adds to that fatigue. Attention spans for marketing content have reportedly dropped to about eight seconds, and people bounce off a hard-to-use site well before that.
The best waiters read the table. They bring you what you need, answer your questions, and leave you to enjoy your night. Bad ones hover, interrupt, and let your food go cold. Your website should work like the good waiter: attentive, helpful, and gone the moment you’ve got what you came for.
Good website design respects the fact that your visitor has a question, limited patience, and a life to get back to. The whole point of thoughtful web design is getting them to the answer fast and letting them leave feeling good about you.
And the payoff: a website that helps someone leave quickly is the one they remember, come back to, and tell their mates about.
What good website UX actually looks like
The real magic of your brand usually happens off the screen: a great conversation, a brilliant event, a giant player face at the rugby that someone takes a selfie with (yes, that was us).
Your website’s job is to be ready when that real-world moment sends someone to check you out. It doesn’t need to dazzle them into a two-hour browsing session, just quietly confirm “yep, these are the right people,” answer what’s on their mind, and let them get on with their day.
Physical creates the feeling. A clean, fast, genuinely helpful website scales it. You want both working together.
If your site feels more like a maze than a good waiter, slow, cluttered, or making people hunt for basic answers, it’s quietly costing you. It might still look great and be losing you customers anyway, because looking good isn’t the same as being easy to use when someone’s running on empty.
We love a good-looking website as much as anyone, but a website that works matters more. One that respects people’s time, answers their questions, and sends them happily on their way.
